Recognizing DVT Symptoms

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is a potentially serious condition that occurs when blood clots develop in deep veins, usually in the lower extremities. DVT can be life-threatening if left untreated, so it is important to seek treatment from a vein specialist right away if you experience symptoms. Call a specialist about deep vein thrombosis treatment in Houston if you have these symptoms.

Swelling in the affected area—typically the legs—is the most common symptom of DVT. Although there may occasionally be swelling in both legs, usually only the leg where the clot is located will become inflamed. Cramping and soreness are also possible. Be especially alert to these symptoms after a long period of being sedentary, such as after a long-haul flight or when you have been in bed with an injury. Sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, rapid pulse, and coughing up blood can all indicate that the clot has broken off and traveled to your lungs, where it could cause a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Seek emergency care if you have pulmonary embolism symptoms.
