Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) can be debilitating for those that suffer from it. PAD is caused by blockages in your arteries, most notably your legs and feet. These blockages stem from fatty deposits, known as plaque or atherosclerosis, narrowing the arteries from their normal diameter. If left untreated, PAD can cause tissue damage, which could result in amputations, stroke, or heart attacks. When caught early enough, PAD is very manageable with minimally invasive treatments available at vascular centers.
If you suspect you may have PAD, the best course of action is to schedule an appointment with a vascular specialist. Once it is determined that you are affected by vascular disease, your doctor will present you with a few options for treatment. When it comes to PAD, there are a couple of treatments that will prove effective. Open vascular surgery is a time consuming and invasive treatment, but it is really only required for severe cases. More than likely, PAD can be treated using minimally invasive endovascular treatments.
Endovascular treatments use small incisions that result in less pain and faster recovery. These types of treatments are also especially helpful for patients who have health conditions which limit their ability to receive open vascular surgery. There are two types of endovascular PAD treatments: Angioplasty and Stenting.
- Angioplasty involves making a small incision to insert a catheter, which has a small balloon on the end of it, into the affected artery. Once it is guided to the blockage, the balloon inflates, opening the artery to a more normal width.
- If the vascular specialist believes there is a risk the artery will close up again, they will use the second treatment: Stenting. A stent is a mesh wire cylinder that is inserted into the artery which prevents it from shutting. This cylinder will keep the blood flow from being restricted by a contracting artery.
